Follow this process when you want to secure your SAP NetWeaver Portal with SSL quickly, but don’t want to change your corporate portal security settings. This process also avoids certificate conflicts that may arise. |

When implementing an external-facing portal, you often need to implement SSL certificates to secure sensitive information from Internet threats. Almost everyone opts for implementing security certificates on a Web server instead of a portal server. One of the reasons might be that the process of implementing SSL certificates on Web server is a common task for the network team in organizations.
Typically, the SSL implementation process begins with generating the certificate signing request (CSR), followed by submitting the CSR to a certificate authority (CA) for approval. Finally, the approved SSL certificate is installed on the Web server — the corporate server that you are going to use for NATing. However, apart from this commonly followed process, there is another effective way of installing SSL certificates.
I will explain this process using my own project implementation as an example. In my organization, I was told that the corporate network team that maintains the corporate domain does not want its server to be accessed using HTTPS. However, my project demands access to SAP NetWeaver Portal, which was NATed with a corporate domain that I access with HTTPS. In this case, implementing SSL certificates via Visual Administrator allowed me to secure an external-facing portal without securing the corporate server.
